Understanding GNI per Capita by Country

GNI per capita divides gross national income by population, providing a per-person income measure. The World Bank uses GNI per capita as the primary criterion for classifying countries into income groups: low-income (below $1,145), lower-middle ($1,146–$4,515), upper-middle ($4,516–$14,005), and high-income (above $14,005).

These income classifications determine eligibility for concessional lending from the World Bank and other development institutions. When a country crosses the high-income threshold — as South Korea, Chile, and several Gulf states have done — it "graduates" from development assistance eligibility.
