GDP per capita in purchasing power parity (PPP) terms is widely considered the best single measure for comparing living standards across countries. It adjusts for both population size and local price levels — if a haircut costs $5 in India but $30 in Switzerland, PPP accounts for that difference. The data comes from the IMF World Economic Outlook using conversion factors from the International Comparison Program.

The PPP rankings reveal a different picture of global prosperity than nominal figures. Small, wealthy nations — Luxembourg, Singapore, Ireland, Qatar, Macao — top the list with values exceeding $80,000 per person. Ireland's high ranking is partially artificial, inflated by multinational corporations routing profits through the country for tax purposes. Among large economies, the United States leads at roughly $85,000, well ahead of Germany ($68,000) and Japan ($52,000). China, despite having the world's largest economy in PPP terms, ranks only around $25,000 per capita.

PPP per capita is particularly useful for assessing actual material living standards. A salary of $30,000 in Vietnam provides a lifestyle comparable to earning $60,000+ in the United States, because housing, food, and services cost a fraction of American prices. However, PPP comparisons become less reliable for internationally traded goods — an iPhone costs roughly the same everywhere, making low-income countries relatively poorer for technology and imported goods than PPP figures suggest.
