Understanding Gross National Income (GNI) by Country

Gross National Income (GNI) measures the total income earned by a country's residents, regardless of where that income is generated. Unlike GDP, which counts economic activity within borders, GNI includes income earned abroad by citizens and excludes income earned domestically by foreigners. The data comes from the World Bank.

For most countries, GNI and GDP are similar. But for countries with large overseas worker populations (Philippines, Mexico — remittances boost GNI above GDP) or countries hosting many multinational headquarters (Ireland, Luxembourg — profits flow out, so GDP exceeds GNI), the difference is significant. Ireland's GDP is roughly 60% higher than its GNI due to multinational profit shifting.
