About trade balance
A surplus means a country sells more abroad than it buys; a deficit means it buys more and pays for the difference by borrowing from or selling assets to the rest of the world. Neither is good or bad in itself: a fast-growing economy importing machinery can run a deficit for years, and a surplus can reflect weak spending at home.
This is the national accounts balance of goods and services. The current account adds income such as interest, dividends and remittances, which can turn a trade deficit into a current account surplus or the reverse.
About these figures
Definition. The balance of international trade in goods and services is the difference between the exports and imports of goods and services. This indicator is expressed as a percentage of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) which is the total income earned through the production of goods and services in an economic territory during an accounting period. (The publisher's definition of “External balance on goods and services (% of GDP)”, copied from the World Bank (World Development Indicators) on 2026-09-07.)
Unit. % of GDP
Coverage. 184 of 217 countries and territories have a figure. Each country shows its latest available year, from 2020 to 2025. The most common is 2025 (138 of 184 countries).
The median and any other summary on this page count each country once, so they are not world averages. Values are rounded for display; the CSV download has full precision.
The publisher revises past years when it updates the series, so a figure here can change after it first appears.
