How to read United States's GDP

For the United States, the dollar is both the domestic reporting currency and the comparison unit on this page. That removes one currency-conversion step, but it does not remove inflation. A larger current-dollar GDP therefore does not, on its own, establish faster real production or higher output per person. Read the real-growth and per-capita series alongside this level series.

The historical IMF series shown here runs from 2000 to 2025. Its last historical value is $30.77T (2025). Compared with $21.38T in 2020, that is a 43.9% increase in nominal US-dollar terms over five years. This calculation excludes the current year and future projections. It is not a real GDP growth rate; past estimates can still be revised.

Compare published GDP estimates

Each source keeps its own reference year below. IMF values for 2026 and later are estimates or projections. A difference between years is not a same-year disagreement.

Values are normalized to US dollars, including the IMF's billion-dollar input units. Source releases can differ in period, vintage and methodology; this comparison does not identify a universally correct publisher.

About This Indicator

Definition

Economic output at current prices, expressed using market exchange rates.

Methodology

The IMF compiles GDP data from national statistical agencies and central banks. For the World Economic Outlook (WEO), IMF staff review national accounts data, apply adjustments for methodological differences, and produce forecasts for the current and following years. GDP is calculated using the expenditure approach (C + I + G + NX) or the production approach (sum of value added across sectors). The conversion to US dollars uses the average market exchange rate for the year.
