Japan—GDP (Current USD)
How to read Japan's GDP
Japan’s GDP is converted from yen into US dollars for this series. Exchange-rate changes can move its dollar ranking without an equivalent change in domestic real output. Separate that translation effect from inflation and real growth before interpreting a rise or fall. A comparison with South Korea should use the same source, year, and nominal or PPP definition.
The historical IMF series shown here runs from 2000 to 2025. Its last historical value is $4.44T (2025). Compared with $5.19T in 2020, that is a 14.5% decrease in nominal US-dollar terms over five years. This calculation excludes the current year and future projections. It is not a real GDP growth rate; past estimates can still be revised.
Compare published GDP estimates
Each source keeps its own reference year below. IMF values for 2026 and later are estimates or projections. A difference between years is not a same-year disagreement.
| Publisher | GDP (USD) | Year | Series |
|---|---|---|---|
| IMF | $4.38T | 2026 | IMF.NGDPD |
| World Bank | $4.44T | 2025 | NY.GDP.MKTP.CD |
| United Nations | $4.03T | 2024 | UN.GDP |
Values are normalized to US dollars, including the IMF's billion-dollar input units. Source releases can differ in period, vintage and methodology; this comparison does not identify a universally correct publisher.
Line styles separate years at 2026. This date threshold does not establish whether an individual reading is observed, estimated or forecast. Gaps are not interpolated.

About This Indicator
Definition
Economic output at current prices, expressed using market exchange rates.
Methodology
The IMF compiles GDP data from national statistical agencies and central banks. For the World Economic Outlook (WEO), IMF staff review national accounts data, apply adjustments for methodological differences, and produce forecasts for the current and following years. GDP is calculated using the expenditure approach (C + I + G + NX) or the production approach (sum of value added across sectors). The conversion to US dollars uses the average market exchange rate for the year.
