How to read France's GDP

France’s nominal GDP measures total economic output at current prices. Comparing its USD level with Germany is useful for economic size, but does not measure living standards or real growth. Use GDP per capita for a per-person comparison, and inspect whether a published figure is a historical estimate or a forecast before comparing the two countries.

The historical IMF series shown here runs from 2000 to 2025. Its last historical value is $3.37T (2025). Compared with $2.65T in 2020, that is a 27.3% increase in nominal US-dollar terms over five years. This calculation excludes the current year and future projections. It is not a real GDP growth rate; past estimates can still be revised.

Compare published GDP estimates

Each source keeps its own reference year below. IMF values for 2026 and later are estimates or projections. A difference between years is not a same-year disagreement.

About This Indicator

Definition

Economic output at current prices, expressed using market exchange rates.

Methodology

The IMF compiles GDP data from national statistical agencies and central banks. For the World Economic Outlook (WEO), IMF staff review national accounts data, apply adjustments for methodological differences, and produce forecasts for the current and following years. GDP is calculated using the expenditure approach (C + I + G + NX) or the production approach (sum of value added across sectors). The conversion to US dollars uses the average market exchange rate for the year.
