About energy consumption

Primary energy is counted before it is turned into electricity, fuel or heat, so a country that burns coal or gas to make electricity shows a larger figure than one that gets the same electricity from hydropower, whose primary energy is counted as the electricity it produces.

The figures come from the International Energy Agency’s energy balances, published by the World Bank, and cover the countries the agency reports on. Cold climates, heavy industry and energy exports all raise use per person; the figure is not a measure of household consumption.

About these figures

Definition. Energy use refers to use of primary energy before transformation to other end-use fuels, which is equal to indigenous production plus imports and stock changes, minus exports and fuels supplied to ships and aircraft engaged in international transport. (The publisher's definition of “Energy use (kg of oil equivalent per capita)”, copied from the World Bank (World Development Indicators) on 2026-09-07.)

Unit. kg of oil equivalent per capita

Coverage. 149 of 217 countries and territories have a figure. Every figure is for 2024.

The median and any other summary on this page count each country once, so they are not world averages. Values are rounded for display; the CSV download has full precision.

The publisher revises past years when it updates the series, so a figure here can change after it first appears.
