Air Pollution by Country 2023
Average exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in micrograms per cubic meter, weighted by where people live, for each country’s whole population, urban and rural.
Qatar has the highest population-weighted exposure to PM2.5: 107.8 in 2023. Next are Saudi Arabia (73.5), Bangladesh (69.3), Nigeria (65.7) and Niger (65.2). Greenland has the lowest population-weighted exposure to PM2.5: 1.6 in 2023. The median across the 200 countries is 17.3, counting each country once, so it is not a world average.

About air pollution
PM2.5 are particles smaller than 2.5 micrometers, fine enough to reach deep into the lungs and the bloodstream. The World Health Organization’s 2021 air quality guideline for the annual average is 5 micrograms per cubic meter.
These estimates combine satellite observations, chemical transport models and ground monitors, from the Global Burden of Disease study as published by the World Bank. They include natural sources such as desert dust, which is why some countries near large deserts rank high even with little industry.
Rankings built from city monitor readings, such as those published by air quality companies, measure something else: the air in the cities that have monitors, not the exposure of a whole population. The two can rank countries very differently.
About these figures
Definition. Population-weighted exposure to ambient PM2.5 pollution is defined as the average level of exposure of a nation's population to concentrations of suspended particles measuring less than 2.5 microns in aerodynamic diameter, which are capable of penetrating deep into the respiratory tract and causing severe health damage. Exposure is calculated by weighting mean annual concentrations of PM2.5 by population in both urban and rural areas. (The publisher's definition of “PM2.5 air pollution, mean annual exposure (micrograms per cubic meter)”, copied from the World Bank (World Development Indicators) on 2026-09-07.)
Unit. micrograms per cubic meter
Coverage. 200 of 217 countries and territories have a figure. Every figure is for 2023.
The median and any other summary on this page count each country once, so they are not world averages. Values are rounded for display; the CSV download has full precision.
The publisher revises past years when it updates the series, so a figure here can change after it first appears.
Questions about these figures
Which country has the highest population-weighted exposure to PM2.5?
Qatar has the highest population-weighted exposure to PM2.5: 107.8 in 2023. The figures come from the World Bank World Development Indicators.
Which country has the lowest population-weighted exposure to PM2.5?
Greenland has the lowest population-weighted exposure to PM2.5: 1.6 in 2023.
How many countries are ranked, and for which years?
200 countries and territories have a figure in this ranking. Every figure is for 2023.
What is the median population-weighted exposure to PM2.5 across countries?
The median is 17.3: half of the 200 countries are above it and half below. Every figure is for 2023. It counts each country once, so it is not a world average.
Which country's population-weighted exposure to PM2.5 changed the most since 2013?
Among the 200 countries with figures for both 2013 and 2023, China changed the most: -19.8 since 2013, to 32 in 2023.
Where does the United States rank on population-weighted exposure to PM2.5?
The United States ranks 175 of 200, at 7 in 2023.
Which country has the highest population-weighted exposure to PM2.5 in each region?
East Asia & Pacific: Mongolia (42.7); Europe & Central Asia: Tajikistan (33.3); Latin America & Caribbean: Peru (31.1); Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan & Pakistan: Qatar (107.8); North America: the United States (7); South Asia: Bangladesh (69.3); Sub-Saharan Africa: Nigeria (65.7). Figures are for 2023 unless another year is shown. Regions follow the World Bank's groups.

The API also serves this indicator as CSV: statisticsoftheworld.com/api/v1/rankings/EN.ATM.PM25.MC.M3?format=csv. It lists the stored latest figures highest first under the publisher's country names and can include the World aggregate, so its rows and ranks can differ from this table.
