About hospital beds
The figures come from the World Health Organization and national sources, published by the World Bank, and the latest year differs from country to country. Countries count beds differently, for example whether long-term care beds are included, so small differences are not meaningful.
More beds are not necessarily better care: countries that treat more patients as day cases and keep hospital stays short need fewer beds for the same care.
About these figures
Definition. Hospital beds include inpatient beds available in public, private, general, and specialized hospitals and rehabilitation centers. In most cases beds for both acute and chronic care are included. (The publisher's definition of “Hospital beds (per 1,000 people)”, copied from the World Bank (World Development Indicators) on 2026-09-07.)
