About women in parliament
The figures come from the Inter-Parliamentary Union, published by the World Bank, and refer to the lower or only chamber at the date of the IPU’s count each year, so a recent election may not be reflected yet.
Many countries reserve seats for women or require parties to put women on their lists, by law or by party rules, and these quotas explain much of the difference between countries.
About these figures
Definition. Women in parliaments are the percentage of parliamentary seats in a single or lower chamber held by women. (The publisher's definition of “Proportion of seats held by women in national parliaments (%)”, copied from the World Bank (World Development Indicators) on 2026-09-07.)
Unit. %
Coverage. 193 of 217 countries and territories have a figure. 184 of 193 countries show 2025; the other 9 show their latest available year (2018 to 2024).
The median and any other summary on this page count each country once, so they are not world averages. Values are rounded for display; the CSV download has full precision.
The publisher revises past years when it updates the series, so a figure here can change after it first appears.
