About political stability
The estimate measures perceptions of the likelihood that the government will be destabilized or overthrown by unconstitutional or violent means, including politically motivated violence and terrorism. It combines surveys of households and firms with assessments by risk-rating agencies, think tanks and international organizations.
Each estimate comes with a margin of error, and the margins of countries close together in the ranking overlap, so small differences are not meaningful. The scale is relative: it places countries against each other in a given year, so a change in a country’s estimate can reflect other countries moving.
The 0 to 100 score is the World Bank’s own rescaling of the same estimate and orders countries identically.
About these figures
Definition. Political Stability (PV) captures perceptions of the extent to which political power and governance are secure from destabilization, and of the likelihood that authority will be challenged or altered through violent, coercive, or unconstitutional means. Governance estimate from the aggregation model, in units of a standard normal distribution, i.e. ranging from approximately -2.5 to 2.5. Larger values correspond to better governance. (The publisher's definition of “Political Stability - Governance estimate (approx. -2.5 to +2.5)”, copied from the World Bank on 2026-10-11.)
Unit. standard-normal governance estimate (approximately −2.5 to 2.5)
Coverage. 207 of 217 countries and territories have a figure. Every figure is for 2025.
The median and any other summary on this page count each country once, so they are not world averages. Values are rounded for display; the CSV download has full precision.
The publisher revises past years when it updates the series, so a figure here can change after it first appears.
