Informal Economy (Shadow Economy)

Definition

Economic activity that is not regulated, taxed, or monitored by the government, including unregistered businesses, cash-only transactions, and subsistence activities.

Explanation

In many developing countries, the informal economy employs 50-80% of workers and can represent 30-60% of GDP. Nigeria, India, and many African nations have enormous informal sectors. GDP statistics undercount informal activity, meaning official GDP figures may significantly underestimate true economic output. The informal economy provides livelihoods but offers no worker protections, benefits, or tax revenue.
