Inequality

Poverty Rate (International Poverty Line)

Definition

The percentage of a population living below the international poverty line of $2.15 per day (2017 PPP).

Explanation

The World Bank sets the international poverty line at $2.15/day, updated for purchasing power. By this measure, global extreme poverty has fallen dramatically — from 36% in 1990 to under 10% today. However, higher thresholds ($3.65, $6.85/day) show much more poverty. Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest concentration of extreme poverty.
