Geopolitics
Global South
Definition
A geopolitical term for developing and emerging economies, primarily in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Oceania — replacing older terms like "Third World."
Explanation
The Global South contains roughly 85% of the world's population but produces only ~40% of nominal GDP (though more in PPP terms). BRICS expansion and G20 reform reflect the Global South's push for greater representation. The term is geographic shorthand — Australia and New Zealand are geographically "south" but not part of the Global South.
