Food Security

Definition

When all people have access to sufficient, safe, nutritious food. Food insecurity affects ~800 million people globally despite enough food being produced.

Explanation

Food insecurity is driven by poverty, conflict, climate change, and supply chain disruptions. The 2022 Ukraine war disrupted wheat exports (Ukraine/Russia = 30% of global exports), causing price spikes in dependent nations. Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia are most affected. The Global Hunger Index tracks food security across countries.
