About container port traffic
Counts include transshipment, containers unloaded from one ship and loaded onto another, so hub ports that serve as transfer points handle far more containers than their country’s own trade would need.
The figures are published by the World Bank. Only readings from 2022 or later are ranked, because some countries’ latest figure is several years old; they are listed under the table.
About these figures
Definition. Port container traffic measures the flow of containers from land to sea transport modes, and vice versa, in twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), a standard-size container. Data refer to coastal shipping as well as international journeys. Transshipment traffic is counted as two lifts at the intermediate port (once to off-load and again as an outbound lift) and includes empty units. (The publisher's definition of “Container port traffic (TEU: 20 foot equivalent units)”, copied from the World Bank (World Development Indicators) on 2026-09-07.)
Unit. TEU (20-foot equivalent units)
Coverage. 118 of 217 countries and territories have a figure. 103 of 118 countries show 2024; the other 15 show their latest available year (2022 or 2023).
The median and any other summary on this page count each country once, so they are not world averages. Values are rounded for display; the CSV download has full precision.
The publisher revises past years when it updates the series, so a figure here can change after it first appears.
