Estimated annual number of maternal deaths during pregnancy, childbirth or within 42 days after termination of pregnancy, from causes related to or aggravated by pregnancy or its management; accidental and incidental causes are excluded.
Measurement basis: UN Maternal Mortality Estimation Inter-Agency Group (MMEIG) Bayesian model estimates disseminated by WHO; counts, not maternal mortality ratios.
Reference-period cadence: annual.
Source update cadence: every 3–5 years. This does not establish a publication date for an individual reading.
- Modelled annual number of maternal deaths, not deaths per live births. Pregnancy-related deaths extend through 42 days after termination; accidental and incidental causes are excluded.
